Celebrating 10 years with Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi
It’s been ten years since our favorite lesbians Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi got married. Let’s walk back through the wonderful moments of our favorite Hollywood power couple.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi: The wedding ceremony
In August 2008, DeGeneres and de Rossi exchanged vows in an intimate wedding ceremony that included 19 close friends and family at their home in Los Angeles.
This was made possible after the landmark decision of the California Supreme Court on May 2008, finally paving the way for same sex couples to legally get married.
DeGeneres proposed to de Rossi with a gorgeous three-carat Neil Lane marquis cut stone set with pink diamonds ring.
Within a couple of months, the beaming couple, wearing Zac Posen designs, said their heartfelt vows in a ceremony officiated by the late acclaimed philosopher and self-help guru, Wayne Dyer.
The private gathering was commemorated with platinum wedding bands and a performance by Joshua Radin while their Beverly Hills home were filled with vegan red velvet cake.
It was such a romantic and beautiful ceremony for the lovebirds and a historic moment for everyone who struggled to fight for marriage equality.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi: Becoming a couple
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi initially felt an immediate spark between them during their encounter backstage at VH1s Big in ’04 Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Dec. 1, 2004.
However, it took de Rossi three years before acting on how she felt about DeGeneres.
It took quite a while for de Rossi to acknowledge her feelings because she was still closeted during that time in fear that coming out may damage her career.
In the meantime, DeGeneres was already stirring up Hollywood by openly coming out as gay in April 1997.
She made her revelation on the cover of Time Magazine as well as on a momentous episode of her ABC sitcom, Ellen.
The couple officially announced that they started dating when they walked the red carpet together at a Golden Globes after party on Jan. 16, 2005.
Degeneres showed her support for de Rossi after the latter’s show, Arrested Development, was nominated for the Golden Globes.
The couple’s relationship blossomed and they moved in together in a home in Los Angeles.

So what does it mean for Ellen and Portia that they’re married to each other?
In an interview with People in 2016, DeGeneres shared that: “I’m grateful for my health, and I’m so grateful for the love in my life. Because not everybody finds that. Not everybody finds that best friend.”
“Portia and I constantly say to each other, ‘We are so lucky.’ Sometimes it’s lying in bed at night before I go to sleep, and I just say thank you to whatever, whoever is out there,” she added.
De Rossi said during her interview with Out magazine in 2013: “We really support each other in whatever we’re doing and we’re incredibly happy, which is why you don’t see us in the press so much.”
It’s good to know that the couple is just like us: glad to be with that one person that you love the most. As they say, love wins.
