Emmy award-winning actress Jean Smart, renowned for her performances in “Designing Women” and “Hacks,” is set to reunite with fellow original cast members Lee Garlington, Nancy Linari, and Sandra Marshall for a Q&A session following the Saturday, July 15 performance of the Fountain Theatre’s 40th-anniversary production of “Last Summer at Bluefish Cove.” The play, written by Jane Chambers, had its initial run at the venue from 1983 to 1985 and played a significant role in Smart’s career breakthrough in television.
“Last Summer at Bluefish Cove” tells the story of a group of women spending their summers in a secluded town on Long Island Sound. The harmony of their lesbian community is disrupted when Eva, a recently separated straight woman, unwittingly enters their circle and falls for the charismatic Lil. The play celebrates heartfelt friendships, laughter, and love.
The 1983 production marked a turning point for the lesbian community in Los Angeles and was a noteworthy accomplishment in local theater, as well as a milestone for the Fountain Theatre. Smart’s performance in the play caught the attention of the casting director of “Designing Women,” leading to her prominent role in the popular TV series.
Presented on the Fountain Theatre’s spacious outdoor stage, created during the pandemic, the current production recreates the ambiance of Bluefish Cove, offering an authentic beachfront experience for the audience. Performances will run until August 27, and on July 15, Smart, Garlington, Linari, and Marshall will engage in a Q&A session with the audience.
