‘Lesbian breakup curse’ goes viral on TikTok
A recent string of famous lesbian couple breakups has left users wondering if there is a “lesbian breakup curse” going around.
Like other niche communities online, this issue has lesbian Tiktok considering its fair share of drama and memes– with the former often leading to the latter.
Curse or not, the term has since gone viral and has become much talked about on the social media app.
A roll of famous lesbian couple breakups
It all started when famous queer couple Sedona and Rylee announced their split in a viral video which garnered over 8.5 million views before it was eventually deleted. They broke up four months after celebrating their one-year anniversary.
Then Alissa and Sam, another famous couple with a considerable following on Tiktok, quietly announced they had called it quits.
By the time Avery and Soph split up, many users began to wonder if a “lesbian breakup curse” is afoot and if it could affect their own relationships as well.
Lesbian breakup curse: Something in the air
The supposed curse, also referred to as the “breakup plague” and the “breakup apocalypse”, has captured the imagination of Lesbian TikTok in recent weeks.
One user posted: “Wtf is in the air why are all the tiktok wlw couples breaking up?”
“It really is contagious right now isn’t it,” wrote another user in the comments of one other video about the supposed curse.
While others said it was just an unfortunate coincidence, some TikTok users blamed the curse on astrology- joking that the alignment of planets was somehow the catalyst for so many public breakups.
Artist King Princess even joked that the “lesbian breakup curse” inspired her to write a new song, which she also posted: “Lesbians break up on TikTok/ which turns into TikToks/ inspiring songs about breakups on TikTok/ the cycle will never end…until they’re gone,” the song goes.
In a comment on another post, one user joked that queer icon JoJo Siwa was to blame for the breakup curse. “It did start when she said she didn’t like the word lesbian,” the user said.
Origins of the lesbian breakup curse
Most users believe, however, that the curse started when pop artist Fletcher name-dropped her ex-girlfriend Shannon Beveridge’s current partner in her new song “Becky’s So Hot”.
Fletcher shared a clip of her new song on TikTok on July 12: “If I were you, I’d probably want to keep her/ ‘Cause Becky’s so hot in your vintage T-shirt/ Ooh she’s the one I should hate/ But I wanna know how she tastes.”
The name-drop was polarizing. Some users liked the song; others found it inappropriate.
In the weeks that followed the release of Fletcher’s song, several popular WLW couples announced their breakups: the hashtag “beckyssohot”- linked to the “lesbian breakup curse” drama- now has over 13 million views on TikTok.
