More LGBTQ women candidates heading to Congress

LGBTQ women candidates

With only a couple of months leading to the November polls, more LGBTQ women candidates are stepping up to fight for the community’s rights.

These candidates, mostly Democrats, were nominated in the primaries to run for Congress and state legislature across a number of states.

Here’s a list of candidates currently in the running:

LGBTQ women candidates: Alabama

1. Felicia Stewart (HD-46) is running for state legislator.

LGBTQ women candidates: Arizona

1. Kyrsten Sinema (Senate) is running for senator.

2. Joan Greene (AZ-05) is running for state legislator against Rep. Andy Biggs, who has spoken out against gay marriage.

LGBTQ women candidates: Arkansas

1. Tippi McCullough (HD-33) is running for state legislator. She was forced to resign five years ago from her teaching job because she was a lesbian.

LGBTQ women candidates: California

1. Katie Hill (CA-25) is running for congresswoman. This district is one of those targeted by the Democrats to flip in order to win control of the House.

2. Joy Silver (SD-28), a noted lesbian aging expert, is running for the California state legislature.

3. Sonia Aery (AD-3), the daughter of Indian immigrants, is running for the California state legislature.

4. Jackie Smith (AD-6) is running for the California state legislature.

5. Sunday Gover (AD-77) is running for the California state legislature.

LGBTQ women candidates: Florida

1. Lauren Baer (FL-18) is running for Congress.

2. Jennifer Webb (HD-69) is running for the Florida Legislature.

LGBTQ women candidates: Georgia

1. Park Cannon (HD-58), a woman of color, is a member of the Georgia House of Representatives.

2. Renitta Shannon (HD-84), a woman of color, is a member of the Georgia House of Representatives.

3. Karla Drennan (HD-85): is a member of the Georgia House of Representatives

LGBTQ women candidates: Indiana

1. Thomasina Marsili (HD-46) is running for the Indiana state House.

2. Sarah Stivers (HD-70) is running for the Indiana state House.

LGBTQ women candidates: Illinois

1. Maggie Trevor (HD-54) is running for the Illinois General Assembly.

LGBTQ women candidates: Kansas

1. Sharice Davids (KS-03), a Native American, is running for congresswoman.

LGBTQ women candidates: Maryland

1. Mary Washington (SD-43), a woman of color, is running for the Maryland State Senate.

LGBTQ women candidates: Michigan

1. Dana Nessel (MI Attorney General) is running for Michigan Attorney General and is part of an all-female statewide candidate slate.

LGBTQ women candidates: Minnesota

1. Angie Craig (MN-02) is running for Congress from Minnesota against Rep. Jason Lewis, who compared LGBTQ people to rapists.

LGBTQ women candidates: Missouri

1. Kathy Ellis (MO-08) is running for congresswoman.

LGBTQ women candidates: Ohio

1. Nickie Antonio (SD-23), elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 2010, is running for the Ohio state Senate.

LGBTQ women candidates: Pennsylvania

1. Kristen Seale (HD-168) is running for the Pennsylvania state House.

LGBTQ women candidates: Texas

1. Lupe Valdez (Governor), a woman of color, is running as gubernatorial nominee.

2. Gina Ortiz Jones (TX-23), a woman of color, is running for Congress.

3. Lorie Burch (TX-03) is running for Congress.

4. Julie Johnson (HD-115) is running for the House of Representatives.

LGBTQ women candidates: Washington

1. Claire Wilson (SD-30) is running for the State Senate.

2. Kathy Gillespie (HD-18 [2]) is running for the House of Representatives.
