Oregon: LGBTQ+ Haven & Progress Pioneer

In a groundbreaking revelation, a report from The Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, highlighted that Oregon stands as the state with the highest per capita LGBTQ+ population in the United States. With 253,300 LGBTQ+ residents constituting 7.8% of the overall population, Oregon takes the lead in embracing diversity and inclusivity.

The Advocate, echoing our sentiments, boldly declares, “We hereby dub Oregon the queerest state!” This proclamation is not without merit, especially considering that the national average of queer-identifying individuals is at 5.6%. It seems Oregon is outpacing the rest of the country in fostering an LGBTQ+-friendly environment.

The state’s prominence in LGBTQ+ representation is not only evident in its population statistics but also in its political landscape. Governor Kate Brown, breaking barriers in 2016, became the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected as a governor in U.S. history. This momentum continued in 2022, as Governor Tina Kotek joined the ranks, becoming one of the first two openly lesbian governors.

The reasons behind Oregon’s status as a haven for the LGBTQ+ community are multifaceted. Beyond its trailblazing governors, the state’s progressive policies play a crucial role. Unlike some states, Oregon does not ban healthcare for transgender individuals, and it consistently defeats anti-gay legislation. Multnomah County’s early embrace of gay marriage in 2004 further solidified its LGBTQ+-friendly reputation, even if initial rulings were later challenged.

Moreover, Oregon’s LGBTQ+ stronghold extends beyond Portland, which stands as a West Coast hub for queer life, second only to San Francisco. Cities like Bend and Eugene contribute to the state’s reputation as a diverse and LGBTQ+-friendly haven. Historic landmarks like Darcelle XV in downtown Portland, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, emphasize the state’s pivotal role in advancing drag and gay rights.

In sports, the Portland Thorns, Timbers, and Trail Blazers made history in 2013 by becoming the first major pro sports teams to endorse the freedom to marry. Oregon’s commitment to progress is further exemplified by hosting annual events like Wine Country Pride in McMinnville, showcasing the inclusive spirit of the town mayor and queer winemaker Remy Drabkin.

While Oregon’s LGBTQ+ population is remarkable, Washington, D.C. claims the highest percentage at 14.3%. Nevertheless, until D.C. gains statehood recognition, Oregon proudly remains the torchbearer of LGBTQ+ acceptance and progress in the United States.
