PFLAG Winter Social: Embrace LGBTQ+ Unity

PFLAG Winter Social: Embrace LGBTQ+ Unity

Amid long nights, PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) is set to illuminate the season with their Winter Social on Monday, Dec. 11, welcoming all to join in the festivities. The event, hosted at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, promises an evening of camaraderie and celebration.

At 6:45 p.m., attendees will gather for a social time, followed by introductions and more engaging activities kicking off at 7 p.m. The event will conclude at 8 p.m., ensuring a warm and welcoming experience for everyone involved.

Oak Ridge boasts an active PFLAG group, convening monthly at various faith community venues, including First Presbyterian, First United Methodist, and Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist churches. The Winter Social at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church is part of this broader effort to create inclusive spaces across different faith communities.

PFLAG, the largest organization in the United States uniting families and allies with LGBTQ+ individuals, aims to foster dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identities. The organization’s mission is to create a healthy and respectful society that embraces human diversity.

Founded in 1973, PFLAG has grown to more than 200,000 members and 500 affiliates nationwide. Jeanne Manford, the visionary behind PFLAG, initiated the organization after walking in the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade with her openly gay son, Morty. Her powerful advocacy for parental support in the face of discrimination laid the foundation for a nationwide movement.

Over the years, PFLAG has evolved into a vital resource, providing support, information, and legislative advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. Notably, PFLAG’s commitment extends beyond gay rights to include support for bisexual and transgender individuals. The organization has been at the forefront of legislative efforts, opposing discrimination and promoting pro-LGBTQ+ policies.

As we gather at the PFLAG Winter Social, let’s reflect on the organization’s rich history, embracing the inclusive vision set forth by its founder. PFLAG continues to be a beacon of support, not only for parents but for siblings, children, and friends of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Together, we illuminate the path toward a more tolerant and understanding society, where the bright lights of unity shine even in the darkest of nights.
