Scandal! Controversy! Welcome to the sex lives of 1950s’ LGBT Hollywood celebrities.
It was just after the Second World War, and despite the destruction it wrought, it brought about a lot of societal changes.
It was also a time of congressional witch hunts, with various famous personalities blacklisted for being communists and homosexuality a tightly-kept secret that could cost you everything.
More importantly, it was a period when sex was oozing out of the bedroom: all hush-hush, of course, but there was a lot– especially in Hollywood.
Your host for LGBT Hollywood celebrities: Scotty Bowers
A former Marine who made a name for himself, Scotty Bowers became famous in Hollywood in the ’50s for– as he would like to put it, “tricking for people.”
He was the go-to-guy when Hollywood people wanted some fun in the sack. And because LGBT was a no-no for studios at that time, he secretly pimped for a lot of actors and actresses who had the inclination.
In 2012, after years of keeping silent, he published a book called Full Service: My Adventure in Hollywood and Secret Sex Life of the Stars. It was just as juicy as the rag magazines back in the ’50s.
You might even recognize some of the stars that he mentions.
LGBT Hollywood celebrities starring…Rock Hudson
Long before the whole world found out about his sexuality, Bowers already knew how gay Rock Hudson was. He was always having sex with boys he ordered, and he sometimes had an orgy with a lot of them.
However, he kept his homosexuality a secret from the public by marrying Phyllis Gate. Ironically, Gate was a lesbian, who liked her girls slim, dark-haired, and young.
LGBT Hollywood celebrities starring…Katharine Hepburn
According to Bowers, Katharine Hepburn was a true blue Sapphist. Among friends, she was a tomboy who liked to wear men’s clothing.
“In the course of time, I would fix her up with over 150 women. Most of them she would only see once or twice, and then tire of them,” wrote Bowers, who became close to Hepburn.
LGBT Hollywood celebrities starring…George Cuckor
The director of The Philadelphia Story, George Cuckor was as clean and precise with films as he was with sex.
Bowers “tricked himself up” for Cuckor the first time they met.
After they had done it, Cuckor would shower and he would ask Bowers to do the same. After that, he would pay Bowers.
LGBT Hollywood celebrities starring…Vincent Price and Coral Browne
While this couple rarely had a sex life together– he was gay, she was a lesbian– they were devoted to one another.
However, that didn’t stop them from requesting Bowers’ service: young men for him and young women for her.
Great times, wouldn’t you say?
