Toni Atkins: Trailblazing for California Governor

In a groundbreaking move for LGBTQ representation, Toni Atkins, the president pro tempore of the California Senate, has publicly expressed her serious consideration of running for governor in 2026. If successful, Atkins would not only break gender barriers but also become California’s first openly LGBTQ governor.

Atkins, a trailblazer in her own right, has an impressive track record, having been the first lesbian to hold the position of Assembly speaker and Senate president pro tempore. Her political journey, from serving as San Diego’s acting mayor to her current role in the Senate, has been marked by a commitment to inclusivity and a focus on policies benefiting marginalized communities.

“I sort of feel like I’m addicted to responsibility,” Atkins remarked, emphasizing her dedication to public service. Her experiences include enacting policies addressing poverty, such as implementing the Affordable Care Act and providing tax benefits to impoverished families.

The 2026 gubernatorial race in California is poised to be a Democratic showdown, with several candidates vying to lead the nation’s most populous state. Among the contenders are Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, former Controller Betty Yee, and Attorney General Rob Bonta.

However, Atkins is banking on her extensive experience, which includes a stint as San Diego’s mayor and the unique distinction of being the only woman to hold the Legislature’s top two positions. Her leadership style, described as more understated, has fostered collaboration across party lines, a quality highlighted by former Republican Leader Shannon Grove.

“She always included us, and there were never any surprises,” said Grove, emphasizing Atkins’ inclusive approach. This collaborative spirit and Atkins’ historic potential could reshape California’s political landscape.

While California prides itself on diversity, it’s noteworthy that all previous governors have been straight white men. Atkins’ candidacy represents a significant step towards breaking this pattern and fostering a more inclusive political environment.

As the race unfolds, Atkins stands as a symbol of progress and a testament to the evolving landscape of American politics, where diversity and representation are gaining increasing prominence.
