5 lesbian couples who inspire us
Nothing lasts forever, more so if you live under a spotlight. That’s why those lesbian relationships that seem to withstand the test of time and paparazzi hold a special place in our hearts. After all, if these couples can actually live under more than the usual relationship pressure, maybe there’s hope for the rest of us mortals, right?
Here are five lesbian couples from different fields who inspire us:
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi
If ever there’s such a thing as the ‘First Ladies of Lesbianism’ or a ‘lesbian power couple’, that would be Ellen and Portia. Both the most visible and most accepted couple in the public eye, the two are considered successful, popular, and lesbian ever since they got together in 2004 and married in 2008. QUOTE: “I really, honestly think that anybody who is openly gay and visible is powerful. It doesn’t matter what you do, you are impacting people.” (Portia de Rossi, May 2013)
Chely Wright and Lauren Blitzer
Chely Wright came out as a lesbian in 2010, and married her girlfriend, Lauren Blitzer of Faith in America, an organization dedicated to ending religious-based bigotry toward LGBT people. The two were legally married in Connecticut in August 2011. QUOTE: “Coming out is a very personal choice. I don’t know what the situation is in your life, but I know that everyone hides something. There comes a point where your balance sheet becomes irreconcilable. Where you just say I can’t hide this particular thing anymore.” (Chely Wright, 2011)
Jenna Wolfe and Stephanie Gosk
Both from NBC, Jenna Wolfe is The Today Show lifestyle correspondent while Stephanie Gosk is the station’s foreign correspondent. They got together in 2000 and announced they were both gay in 2013. QUOTE: “This is the most exciting thing that has ever happened to us. But I don’t want to bring my daughter into a world where I’m not comfortable telling everyone who I am and who her mother is.” (Jenna Wolfe, March 2013)
Wanda Sykes and Alex Niedbalski
Fiery, sharp-tongued comedian Wanda Sykes married Alex Niedbalski, a French woman, a month before she came out in 2008. They had met in 2006. QUOTE: “We are so together now and we all want the same thing and we shouldn’t have to settle for less. Instead of having gay marriage in California, no, we’re gonna have gay marriage across the country.” (Wanda Sykes, 2008)
Jodie Foster and Alexandra Hedison
Of the two, Jodie Foster is better known: Academy Award-winning actress, director, producer, and writer. However, Alexandra Hedison has also made a name for herself as a photographer and filmmaker even as she’s known for appearing in The L Word television series. They began dating in 2013 and were married in 2014. QUOTE: “I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age, in those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually, proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met.” (Jodie Foster, 2013)
