Canada Issues Travel Warning for LGBTQ+ Visitors
In a concerning development, Canada has issued a travel warning to its LGBTQ+ citizens planning trips to the United States. This advisory comes in response to a sharp increase in anti-LGBTQ+ protests in the US, which have surged 30-fold compared to 2017, along with a concerning trend of legal efforts to restrict LGBTQ+ rights.
The advisory issued by Global Affairs Canada acknowledges that certain state laws in the US may affect LGBTQ+ travelers, though it does not specify which states are of particular concern. The term “2SLGBTQI+” is used in Canada to encompass individuals who identify as two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or intersex.
A spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada cited specific concerns related to transgender rights, highlighting recent laws passed in some US states that have banned drag shows and imposed restrictions on transgender individuals’ access to gender-affirming care and participation in sporting events. In Tennessee and Florida, for example, legislation was enacted that severely limits transgender youth’s medical treatment options and bans them from attending drag shows.
The Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ+ advocacy group in the United States, declared a state of emergency for LGBTQ+ Americans due to the proliferation of legislation aimed at regulating the lives of queer individuals in various states.
Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland emphasized that the government’s primary concern is the safety and well-being of all Canadians, including LGBTQ+ citizens. She mentioned that experts are monitoring potential dangers to specific groups of Canadians worldwide but did not comment on whether discussions with the US government had taken place before issuing the advisory.
The United States remains a top travel destination for Canadians, with millions of trips taken each year. Approximately 4% of the Canadian population aged 15 and older identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or belongs to another sexual orientation category.
While the US State Department has stated its commitment to promoting tolerance and LGBTQ+ rights, Canada’s travel advisory underscores the need for caution and awareness among LGBTQ+ travelers visiting the United States. As travelers, it’s crucial to stay informed about relevant state and local laws that may impact LGBTQ+ individuals to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
