Eve Adams: A Queer Icon

One such trailblazer is Eve Adams, a Polish-Jewish immigrant whose indomitable spirit shaped a crucial part of our queer heritage. Her journey, encapsulated in the play “The Great Lesbian Love of Eve Adams,” brings to life a remarkable tale of defiance and love during the prohibition era.
Eve Adams arrived in the United States in 1912 and swiftly embraced her authentic self, challenging societal norms. A literary maven, she ran a lesbian speakeasy, Eve’s Hangout, in New York City’s Greenwich Village—a safe haven for the LGBTQ community amidst a turbulent era of political and social unrest.
Her daring spirit and intellectual pursuits found expression in “Lesbian Love,” a groundbreaking book and perhaps the first ethnography of lesbians in America.
