The Illuminator: Disney vs. DeSantis/Fascists or Not?
Was the sanctified Walt Disney a fascist? His grandniece Abigail Disney thinks so. “He bordered on rabid fascism,” the 62-year-old heiress, film producer, and activist said of her great uncle on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast.
Disney told Maron that while her great-uncle Walt was a “chaotic genius,” he and his brother Roy, her father, played up the prejudices of the time and stoked anti-Semitism and racism whenever it served their purpose.
Abigail spoke with Maron about her new documentary that aims at her family’s company, called “The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales.” She noted that Disney positioned the wolf from “The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf” as a “Jewish peddler” and named one of the wise-cracking black crows from “Dumbo” Jim Crow. DeSantis, for his part, has done everything he can to stoke the culture wars, running the term “woke” into the ground with his “Florida is where woke goes to die.” As someone else pointed out, “Florida is where everyone goes to die.” We can only hope that Donald Trump, the one-man wrecking crew, takes note.
Banning books, banning abortion after six weeks, mouthing “Don’t Say Gay” against LGBTQ
people, Ron DeSantis is fascism personified.
My own anti-Disney statement was made real with my 1991 animated neon work Fat Rat which featured a Fresnel lens lit by a Nazi insignia and ears created from the Disney-licensed waffle iron. At the time, Disney had sued a man with Disney characters tattooed on his arm and a pre-school that had Disney characters painted on its wall.
I wanted to create an anti-Disney work for which I could not be sued. The way the copyright law works is that if you use a licensed product you can do whatever you want with it. You just can’t copy it. So I bought the Disney-licensed waffle iron and cut it in half to make the Mickey ears. Neon tubes animate between “FAT” and “RAT.”
The “Happiest Place on Earth” has snookered and fleeced the public to become one of the wealthiest corporations in the world. Purportedly, with God on their side, DeSantis may be screwed.
