Trailblazing Triumph: Luanne Peterpaul’s Historic Win
In a groundbreaking moment for LGBTQ+ representation, New Jersey Democrat Luanne Peterpaul has emerged victorious in Tuesday’s election, making history as the first openly LGBTQ woman elected to the state Legislature. Securing about 28 percent of the vote, Peterpaul, a former county prosecutor and chair of the LGBTQ rights organization Garden State Equality, triumphed alongside Democrat Margie Donlon, unseating Republicans Kim Eulner and Marilyn Piperno.
Speaking exclusively to NJ Spotlight News after her historic win, Assemblywoman-elect Luanne Peterpaul attributed her success to a united and dedicated team that operated like a family. Reflecting on the campaign, Peterpaul emphasized the importance of a shared belief in their messaging and a commitment to addressing crucial issues facing the state.
In a race marked by the prominence of parental notification policies for transgender and non-binary students, Peterpaul highlighted that her LGBTQ+ identity doesn’t define the work she plans to undertake for the entire state. “Being the first LGBTQ+ out lesbian elected to the legislature, it’s a part of who I am being gay,” she stated. “But it wasn’t the issue that really thrust me into politics except on election night.”
Peterpaul emphasized the broader challenges the community faces, extending beyond LGBTQ+ equality. She underscored the prevalence of anti-Semitism in today’s world and advocated for a more inclusive and civil political dialogue. “We need to look at each other and reach across the aisle and try and have a dialogue that’s not filled with vitriol,” she urged.
Notably, Peterpaul’s running mate, Sen. Vin Gopal, secured re-election by a significant margin for a third term in the fiercely contested 11th district. Gopal credited the victory to “civility,” emphasizing the importance of a respectful and constructive approach in the electoral process.
